We are seeking a talented Associate Scientist to join our Kemin Animal Nutrition & Health (KANA) team. The Associate Scientist - Product Development is responsible for leading a research and development laboratory group while managing multiple R&D projects, performing literature reviews, participate in the evaluation of intellectual property, and participate in external research collaborations. Areas of preferred product development experience are within production animal feed ingredients, pharmaceuticals, health and wellness, probiotics, pathogen control solutions, mold inhibition or similar field.  Prior experience with microbial genomes and genomic modifications desired.

  • Identify external partners for research collaborations.
  • Participate in the evaluation of intellectual property.
  • Lead multiple R&D projects with guidance.
  • Perform literature reviews and incorporating into research strategies.
  • Participate in external research collaborations, representing Kemin.
  • Actively identify and lead research areas that could lead to new product development or process improvement, with guidance.
  • Independently develop SOPs, research protocols, and research methods.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed electronic laboratory notebooks.
  • Independently perform advanced data analysis and review others data
  • Independently develop and communicate research plans
  • Prepare and present research reports in multiple formats for both internal and external audiences.
  • Generate scientific publications used for internal or external purposes
  • Review internal publications.
  • Must adhere to laboratory standard operating procedures, documentation, and guidelines.
  • Troubleshoot issues with laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Manage and mentor direct reports to reach goals
  • Participate in the strategic planning process and customer meetings.


  • PhD with 3+years of relevant experience in biochemistry and/or microbiology.
  • Master’s Degree with 7+ years of relevant experience in biochemistry and/or microbiology.
  • Bachelor’s Degree with 9+ years of relevant experience in biochemistry or microbiology.
  • Preferred 2+ years of people management experience in leading product development groups.
  • Must have a solid understanding and adherence to the Servant Leadership philosophy
  • Detail oriented, organized, and motivated by accomplishment.
  • Must be able to work independently, and have the ability to work in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment
  • Ability to interact well with others in a team environment.
  • Strong experimental design and problem-solving skills.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, suitable for external presentations.
  • Advanced computer knowledge (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Demonstrated history of writing standard procedures and methodologies.
  • Ability to understand and perform basic statistical analysis.
  • Analytical lab skills.
  • Ability to maintain instruments.
  • Excellent Scientific skills in experiment design and data collection.
  • Scientific curiosity and innovation.
  • Handle multiple projects efficiently.
  • Reliable and self-motivated.
  • Good project management skills.
  • Ability to apply knowledge quickly to projects.
  • Fluent in English
  • Up to 10% domestic and international travel
